Set Up Your Profile Correctly

Before you start posting or engaging, lock down the basics. Your profile is the first thing people see, and Instagram's algorithm notices how complete it is.

  • Username: Make it memorable and on-brand. You can't change it for 14 days after creation, so get it right the first time.
  • Bio: Fill it out completely. Add a description, link, and call-to-action. An empty bio signals a dead or spam account to the algorithm.
  • Profile picture: Use a real image, not a placeholder. Instagram accounts with no profile photo get throttled in reach.
  • Category: Select the right one—Creator, Business, or Personal. This affects how the algorithm treats your content.

Set Up Your Profile Correctly

Warm Up Your Account Before Posting

New accounts start with zero trust. Jump straight into posting and Instagram will shadow-ban you or tank your reach. Warm-up sessions build credibility.

  • Spend 20+ sessions scrolling through feeds, liking posts, following accounts in your niche, and watching Stories. This mimics real user behaviour.
  • Interact naturally: Leave genuine comments, not spam. Follow accounts you actually want to engage with.
  • Space it out: Don't do all 20 sessions in one day. Spread them over a week. Instagram detects bot-like bursts.
  • Use an anti-detect browser: Mask your device fingerprint so the platform doesn't link your new account to your other profiles or previous bans.

Connect Proxy and Anti-Detect Setup

If you're running multiple Instagram accounts or managing accounts remotely, proxy and anti-detect are non-negotiable.

  • Residential proxy: Route your connection through a home IP, not a data centre. Instagram flags server IPs immediately.
  • Mobile proxy: If you're posting Stories or using features tied to mobile, a mobile proxy from a real carrier (Vodafone, Kyivstar, Lifecell in Ukraine) keeps your footprint clean.
  • Anti-detect browser: Spoof your device, OS, and browser fingerprint. This prevents Instagram from detecting that you're managing multiple accounts from the same machine.
  • Separate profiles per browser: Each account gets its own profile in your anti-detect. Don't mix them.

Plan Your First Posts

Your first content sets the tone for algorithmic treatment. Instagram accounts with consistent posting history get better reach than dormant ones.

  • Post frequency: Start with 3–5 posts before you launch any campaigns. This gives Instagram data to work with.
  • Content quality: Use high-resolution images or video. Blurry or low-effort content tanks engagement and signals spam.
  • Niche relevance: Post content that matches your category and audience. Mixed niches confuse the algorithm and kill reach.
  • Captions and hashtags: Write real captions, not keyword spam. Use 15–25 relevant hashtags, not 30+ random ones.

Enable Business Features if Needed

If you're running ads or selling, switch to a Business account and link it to a Business Manager.

  • Insights: Business accounts show you reach, impressions, and follower demographics. Personal accounts don't.
  • Contact buttons: Add email, phone, or message buttons to your profile. This builds trust and gives viewers an easy way to reach you.
  • Shopping: If you're selling products, set up Instagram Shopping through your Business Manager.
  • Ad account: Create your ad account through Business Manager, not directly from Instagram. This gives you better control and recovery options.

Security and 2FA

Protect your account from the start. A compromised new account wastes all your warm-up work.

  • Strong password: Use a unique, 16+ character password. Store it in a password manager, not a text file.
  • Two-factor authentication: Enable 2FA immediately. Use an authenticator app, not SMS if possible—SMS is easier to intercept.
  • Backup codes: Save your backup codes somewhere safe. If you lose access to your authenticator, these get you back in.
  • Trusted devices: Don't mark untrusted devices as trusted. Only do this on devices you own and control.

Monitor Initial Performance

Track how Instagram treats your account in the first two weeks. This tells you if something's wrong before you spend money on ads.

  • Reach and impressions: Check Insights after each post. New accounts typically see lower reach—this is normal.
  • Engagement rate: If you're getting 0 likes or comments, the account may be shadow-banned. If this happens, pause posting and let it rest for a few days.
  • Follower growth: Organic followers should trickle in slowly. Sudden spikes or drops signal algorithm trouble.
  • Comment moderation: Watch for spam comments. Delete them and mark as spam immediately. Leaving spam up hurts your credibility score.

Avoid Common Launch Mistakes

New account owners often torpedo their reach before they even start.

  • Posting too fast: Don't upload 10 posts in one day. Instagram sees this as bot behaviour and throttles reach.
  • Engagement pods: Don't join comment pods or like-for-like groups. Instagram's algorithm detects coordinated engagement and penalises it.
  • Buying followers: Fake followers tank your engagement rate and signal spam to Instagram. Start with zero real followers instead.
  • Linking to external sites too early: Don't drop external links in captions before your account has history. Instagram restricts links from new accounts to prevent spam.
  • Copying captions or hashtags: Reusing the exact same caption across multiple posts looks automated. Write unique copy each time.

When to Launch Paid Campaigns

Timing matters. Launch ads too early and Instagram will reject them or kill your reach. Wait too long and you waste the account.

  • Minimum age: Wait at least 7–10 days after account creation before running paid ads. The account needs history first.
  • Minimum posts: Have at least 3 posts live before you launch campaigns. Ad accounts need content to promote.
  • Account status: Make sure your account isn't under review or restricted. Check your account settings for any warnings.
  • Payment method: Link your payment method (card or Wise) before you create your first campaign. Rejected payments flag new accounts.

Backup and Documentation

Keep records of everything. If Instagram locks you out or your account gets compromised, you'll need proof of ownership.

  • Save login credentials: Store username, password, and 2FA backup codes in an encrypted password manager.
  • Document account creation: Screenshot your account creation date and initial setup. This helps if you need to appeal a restriction.
  • Keep email access: The email linked to your account must stay active and accessible. If you lose email access, you lose the account.
  • Export data: Use Instagram's data export tool to download your posts and metadata. This is your backup if the account gets deleted.

Ready to Scale

Once your Instagram account is warmed up, properly configured, and showing stable reach, you're ready to run campaigns or sell. If you're managing multiple accounts, this same checklist applies to each one—just space them out and use separate anti-detect profiles and proxies for each.
