You buy a residential proxies traffic package, set it up, and two days later it's half gone. You're left wondering where it all went. The answer isn't mysterious—it's usually one of a few predictable leaks that drain your budget faster than you planned.

Constant Background Checks and Reconnections
Every time your software or browser reconnects through a proxy, it burns traffic. If you're running multiple tools—an anti-detect browser, a parsing tool, a tracking script—each one may be checking connection status independently. That's three separate traffic hits for one action.
Add in automatic reconnections when a proxy drops for a second, and you're bleeding traffic without doing anything. Some tools reconnect aggressively by default. Check your software settings: most let you dial down the reconnection frequency or disable redundant checks.
Leaky Software and Background Activity
Not all traffic goes where you think it does. Browser extensions, system updates, and background services quietly consume bandwidth. If you're running an anti-detect browser on a system with auto-updating apps, Windows Update, or cloud sync services, they're all pulling from your proxy tunnel.
Windows Update alone can chew through several gigabytes without you noticing. Disable auto-updates before running campaigns. Turn off cloud sync, disable extensions you don't use, and check your browser's background activity settings.
Multiple Simultaneous Connections
If you're running several accounts or bots in parallel, each one needs its own proxy connection. A single poorly configured script can spawn multiple connections to the same proxy. You think you're running one bot; you're actually running three, each burning separate traffic.
Monitor your active connections. Most proxy dashboards show how many concurrent sessions are live. If the number doesn't match your expected count, you've found a leak.
Poor Proxy Rotation Settings
Rotating too frequently wastes traffic. Every rotation is a new connection, a new IP handshake, a new data transfer. If your software rotates every request instead of every few minutes, you're multiplying your consumption.
Set rotation intervals based on your actual needs, not on defaults. For most ad account work, rotating every 10–15 minutes is plenty. Rotating every request is overkill and expensive.
Data Leaks Outside the Proxy Tunnel
Not everything routes through your proxy. DNS requests, WebRTC leaks, and some browser features bypass the tunnel entirely. Your IP address leaks out, and so does unproxied traffic you didn't account for.
Use a leak test tool before and during your campaign. Check for DNS leaks, WebRTC leaks, and IPv6 leaks. In an anti-detect browser, enable proxy settings for all traffic types, including WebRTC, and disable IPv6 if you're not using it.
Idle Connections Staying Open
A connection that's open but inactive still counts as active on the proxy server. If you forget to close a browser tab, leave a script running in the background, or don't properly disconnect sessions, you're paying for bandwidth you're not using.
Set connection timeouts in your software. Most proxies drop idle connections after 15–30 minutes, but some don't. Manually close connections and browser tabs when you're done with them.

Testing and Debugging Overhead
Every test run, every debug attempt, every "let me check if this works" burns traffic. Testing a new account setup, checking if a proxy works, running a small test campaign—it all adds up fast if you're not disciplined about it.
Plan your testing phase and allocate traffic for it separately. Don't test on your main campaign traffic package. Use a small test allocation, run your checks, then move to the live package only when you're confident.

How to Stop the Bleeding
- Monitor in real time. Check your proxy dashboard every few hours during active campaigns. Spot unusual spikes early.
- Audit your software stack. Disable everything you don't need. Turn off auto-updates, disable unused extensions, close background services.
- Test connection counts. Verify that the number of active sessions matches your expected count. One extra bot or script can double your consumption.
- Adjust rotation settings. Rotate less frequently. Every request is overkill for most workflows.
- Run leak tests. Check for DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leaks before you start spending.
- Set timeouts. Configure your software to close idle connections automatically.
Once you plug these leaks, your traffic package will last as long as you planned. The waste wasn't in the package—it was in how it was being used.
